Smaller cyclones generate higher centrifugal forces, so they capture more microscopic dust – the dust that contains allergens and bacteria. In DC50, 19 cyclones work in parallel across two tiers, creating both high centrifugal forces and high airflow. With gravimetric efficiencies of over 99%, they capture more microscopic dust than any other cyclones.

The DC50 cleaner head automatically adjusts between carpets and hard floors, sealing in suction. Dyson engineers stripped back the design so that the brush bar has full, uninterrupted coverage of the surface it’s cleaning. With an in-line drive motor, there’s no belt to replace. And with carbon fibre filaments, fine dust is removed from hard floors.

The brush bars of most vacuums only contain nylon bristles. While these loosen dirt from carpets, they’re less effective on hard floors, where fine dust can be left behind. Dyson brush bars are different. They have a row of anti-static carbon fibre filaments, as well as nylon bristles. The filaments prevent the build up of the static charge that holds dust to the floor, allowing it to be sucked up into the vacuum.

Fixed wheels are not designed to turn corners. But a ball can turn on the spot. As the ball’s axis is titled, its turning circle tightens – allowing full and accurate steering control. The vacuum’s key components have been engineered to fit inside the ball itself. This gives the machine a streamlined profile, allowing access to tight spaces and lowering its centre of gravity to make it lighter in the hand. With DC50, even more of the vacuum’s components are located inside the ball, further streamlining DC50’s profile and reducing its overall size.

DC50 Animal comes with the Tangle-free Turbine tool, so you can remove dirt and hair from confined spaces and uneven surfaces – without it tangling around a brush bar.

When hair wraps around the brush bars of conventional turbine tools, it slows them down or stops them working. Untangling has to be done manually – a messy and unhygienic job. The Tangle-free Turbine tool uses counter-rotating heads with brushes to remove hair and dirt. Because the heads spin in opposing directions, hair doesn’t tangle as it’s picked up – it goes straight into the vacuum, and into the bin.
